Korina Thermally Modified Decking

Korina is the lumber trade’s name for Terminalia superba, a West African hardwood most people have seen without knowing it — Gibson built the Flying V and the Explorer out of it in the late 1950s and the name stuck. Elsewhere in the timber world the same tree is sold as Frake, Limba, Black Limba or Afara.

It has always been a pleasant wood to work: straight-grained, light for a hardwood, predictable under a blade. It has also, historically, been useless outdoors. Untreated Korina has almost no natural decay resistance, and a board left in the weather will not see out many seasons.

Thermal modification changes that completely. The lumber is cooked in a sealed kiln at roughly 400°F in an oxygen-starved atmosphere — no preservatives, no copper, nothing added but heat and steam. What comes out is a genuinely different material: rot-resistant, dimensionally stable, and a deep even brown all the way through the board rather than a color sitting on the surface. We stock it as 5/4x6 decking in two profiles.

Movement falls below 2% in both directions, from 4.3% and 6.3% untreated. That is the difference between a deck that cups and gaps through a wet spring and one that stays flat.

The brown is the wood, not a finish. Scratch it, cut it, sand it — the color is the same underneath, which no stained or pressure-treated board can say.

No copper, no preservatives, no chemistry to leach into soil or run off a deck. The decay resistance comes from removing what fungi eat, so it cannot wear off or need re-applying at a cut end.

Modification sheds density, so boards are lighter than a tropical hardwood of the same size and cut, drill and fasten like ordinary lumber. No special tooling.

How thermal modification works

Thermally modified wood is real wood transformed with heat and steam alone. The run takes 24 to 72 hours and comes in three phases.

  • Drying. The wood is heated gradually while its moisture content is driven to near zero, preparing the cell structure for what follows.
  • High-heat modification. Temperature climbs to 180–230°C (356–446°F) in an oxygen-deprived chamber. The hemicellulose breaks down, the cell structure permanently reorganizes, and the natural sugars and starches that attract insects and decay organisms are converted. The wood turns hydrophobic — it simply absorbs far less moisture than it used to.
  • Cooling and conditioning. Steam is reintroduced as the wood cools, bringing moisture content back to a stable 6–8% and ready to mill.

The trade-off is strength. The process costs roughly a quarter of the wood’s breaking strength, which is why modified Korina belongs in decking, cladding, ceilings, trim and pergolas — and never in a structural span. Frame in something else and let the Korina be the surface you actually see. Anyone who does not volunteer that trade-off is selling you something.

Keep the brown, or let it silver

Korina is photosensitive, so left bare it heads for the soft silver-grey every exterior wood eventually reaches.

Nothing is lost when it does — the decay resistance is structural, not a coating, so a greyed Korina deck is exactly as durable as a fresh one. It is purely a question of what you want to look at.

To hold the golden-to-chocolate brown, use a penetrating oil finish with UV inhibitors and refresh it every couple of years. Because the color runs through the board, touch-ups blend instead of patching — and there is no stripping back to bare wood when you change your mind.

Korina decking sizes and profiles

Both are FAS grade, kiln-dried, and priced by the lineal foot. Other Korina profiles — cladding, ceiling, trim, pergola stock — can be milled to order through our custom millwork shop.

Working with modified Korina decking

It machines, sands and finishes much like the unmodified wood, with one difference worth respecting: thermally modified timber is more brittle than raw stock.

  • Pre-drill near board ends and at every fastener. Brittleness, not density, is the reason here — but the consequence is the same split.
  • Keep carbide tooling sharp. Dull blades tear rather than cut modified wood.
  • Collect the dust. The process produces a fine dark dust worth pulling off the saw.
  • No further seasoning needed. It leaves the kiln at very low moisture content and largely stays there, so it moves very little on site.
  • It takes finish well — oil and water-based stains and paints alike.
  • Never use it structurally. Joists, beams, posts and stringers in something else; Korina is the walking surface.

What is Korina wood?

Korina is Terminalia superba, a West African hardwood also sold as Frake, Limba, Black Limba or Afara. Gibson used it for the 1958 Flying V and Explorer, which is why guitar people know the name. We sell it thermally modified, for exterior use.

What does thermally modified mean?

The wood is heated to 180–230°C in an oxygen-free kiln with steam and nothing else — no chemicals, no preservatives. The heat breaks down the hemicellulose that decay fungi feed on and permanently reduces the wood’s ability to absorb moisture, so it becomes both rot-resistant and dimensionally stable.

Is thermally modified wood safe to handle?

Yes. Nothing is added — no copper, no preservatives, no additives of any kind — so unlike pressure-treated lumber there is no chemistry to leach into soil, run off a deck, or worry about around children and pets. Collect the sawdust as you would with any wood.

Can Korina be used structurally?

No. Thermal modification costs roughly a quarter of the wood’s breaking strength. Use it for decking, cladding, ceilings, trim and pergola surfaces, and frame the structure underneath in something else.

How stable is it really?

Untreated, this species moves about 4.3% radially and 6.3% tangentially through a humidity swing. After modification both figures fall below 2%. In practice that means gaps that stay even and boards that stay flat across the seasons.

Does the color fade?

The surface greys with UV exposure like any exterior wood, but the brown runs through the whole board rather than sitting on it. Oil it to keep the color; leave it and it silvers without losing any durability.

How long does it last?

Properly installed thermally modified wood is generally expected to give 25–30 years or more in exterior service. Drainage, gapping and airflow drive that number as much as the material does.

Korina or Ambara?

Different jobs. Korina is medium-density and holds up to foot traffic, so it is the decking option. Ambara is much lighter and softer — excellent for siding, ceilings and trim, and not suitable for decking at all.

What sizes do you stock?

5/4x6 in two profiles: S4S eased edge for face fastening, and grooved for hidden clips. Both FAS grade and kiln-dried. Other profiles can be milled to order.
