Ambara® Thermally Modified Wood Siding

Ambara® is thermally modified Ayous — Triplochiton scleroxylon, also sold as Obeche, Abachi or Wawa — a lightweight West African hardwood transformed by heat and steam into a premium exterior cladding. It is the answer to the clear Western Red Cedar shortage: knot-free, more dimensionally stable than vertical-grain cedar, and considerably less expensive than A&Btr VG.

Raw Ayous is a cream-colored, Class 5 durability wood that has no business outdoors. Run to a Thermo-D schedule it comes out an even caramel brown right through the board and jumps to Class 1 durability — comparable to clear all-heart Western Red Cedar, with none of cedar’s knots, price or supply anxiety.

One thing to be plain about: Ambara is a siding and paneling wood. At 285 lbf on the Janka scale it is soft and light — perfect on a wall or a ceiling, wrong underfoot. It is not a decking board, a stair tread or a structural member. If you want thermally modified decking, that is Korina.

How thermal modification works

Ambara is real wood changed with heat and steam alone — no chemicals, no preservatives, nothing added. The wood is heated to 180–230°C (356–446°F) in a controlled, oxygen-free chamber over 24 to 72 hours.

At those temperatures the hemicellulose breaks down and the cell structure permanently reorganizes. The sugars and starches that feed insects and decay fungi are converted, and the wood turns hydrophobic — it absorbs up to 50% less moisture than untreated stock. That single change is what kills the swelling, shrinking, warping and cupping that ruins ordinary siding, and it is why raw Ayous goes from strictly-indoors to a Class 1 exterior material.

The caramel color is a byproduct of the same process rather than a stain, which is why it runs through the board. Steam is reintroduced during cooling to bring moisture content back to a stable 6–8%, ready to mill.

It takes a stain better than anything else in the category

Ambara holds finish more evenly than thermally modified Hemlock, and it is photosensitive, so the finish decision is a real one.

Left bare it weathers to silver-grey with no loss of the durability the modification bought. Clear-coated it keeps the caramel. And because the substrate is uniform and knot-free, pigmented finishes land evenly — the deep purple-brown and near-black walls people build out of Ambara are not achievable on a knotty board.

Use a penetrating finish with UV inhibitors and expect to refresh it on a cycle set by exposure rather than by the calendar. A north wall and a south wall will not want the same schedule.

Installing Ambara siding

  • Ordinary tooling. Mild steel is fine; Ambara is easy to cut and easy to install, and it does not blunt blades the way a tropical hardwood does.
  • Nail, screw or clip. It takes fasteners readily, and clip systems give a fully concealed face — see the ExoDek and ExoClad clip systems.
  • Detail it as a rainscreen where you can. Ambara is stable, but a vented cavity behind the cladding is what makes any wood wall last.
  • Finish the cut ends if you are staining, so the caramel does not read differently at the joints.
  • Not underfoot. 285 lbf will mark under furniture and heels. Walls and ceilings only.

What is Ambara wood?

Ambara® is thermally modified Ayous (Triplochiton scleroxylon), a lightweight West African hardwood also known as Obeche, Abachi or Wawa. Heat and steam turn a cream-colored indoor-only wood into a caramel-brown, Class 1 durability exterior cladding.

Can Ambara be used for decking?

No. At 285 lbf Janka it is far too soft for foot traffic, furniture or stair treads. Ambara is for siding, rainscreen, soffit, ceilings, fencing and trim. For thermally modified decking use Korina, which is medium-density and holds up underfoot.

Is Ambara a good Western Red Cedar alternative?

It is the reason the product exists. Ambara is clear and knot-free, more dimensionally stable than vertical-grain cedar (2% movement), Class 1 durable after modification, and well below A&Btr VG cedar on price — with far better availability in clear grades.

Does Ambara contain chemicals?

None. Thermal modification uses heat and steam only — no copper, no preservatives, no additives. That is also why it is a sound choice for saunas and for walls people touch.

What color is Ambara and does it change?

An even caramel brown, carried through the entire board rather than applied to the surface. It is photosensitive: left unfinished it weathers to silver-grey without losing durability. A UV-inhibiting finish holds the caramel, and pigmented finishes land unusually evenly because the substrate is clear.

How stable is Ambara?

2% shrinkage radially and tangentially — better than vertical-grain cedar. Thermally modified wood absorbs up to 50% less moisture than untreated stock, which is what keeps rainscreen reveals even and T&G joints tight.

What sizes do you stock?

Ayous is a fast-growing, abundant West African species available with OLB and FSC certification. Thermal modification is exactly the technology that lets a fast-growing species do a job that would otherwise fall to old-growth cedar or a tropical hardwood.
