Douglas Fir 8/4x4 Dense VG 85/15 Rough KD — Douglas Fir, Dense VG 85/15. 2″ × 4″ nominal. The equivalent price per lineal foot is shown above. Our Clear grade Doug Fir is pulled for export quality 85/15 fine grain.
Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is widely regarded as the most economically important softwood in the world, and it carries the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any wood species on the planet.
The name honors two rival botanists. David Douglas, a Scot, sent the first seeds east from the Pacific Northwest in 1826, while the scientific name — Pseudotsuga menziesii, literally "false hemlock" — credits Archibald Menzies, who documented the tree on Vancouver Island in 1791. It spent some seventy years being reassigned among the pines, spruces, firs and hemlocks before finally earning a genus of its own in 1867.
It is a genuine oddity among conifers. Nearly every other member of the pine family carries twelve pairs of chromosomes; Douglas fir carries thirteen. Two subspecies split the West — the coastal variety that dominates the wet old-growth forests from British Columbia south, and the hardier Rocky Mountain variety that ranges all the way to central Mexico. Left undisturbed, a coastal tree can top 300 feet, measure well over twelve feet across at the base, and live 500 to 1,000 years.
The wood is what earns the reputation. Heartwood runs a warm orange-red to reddish brown against pale, yellowish sapwood, with a straight, pronounced grain and a medium-to-coarse texture. Vertical-grain (quartersawn) boards show tight, parallel lines and are the pinnacle of the species for exposed finish work; mixed-grain boards show a bolder cathedral figure at a friendlier price. Both take stain, paint and clear finishes readily.
Grain count is everything with Douglas fir. Dense old-growth logs — many of them 300 to 400 years old and recovered as salvage after fire or windstorm — yield tight, fine-ringed lumber that faster-growing second growth simply cannot match. That density drives both strength and stability, which is why the finest vertical grain is fought over by export markets and used for structural timbers and clear finish alike. Peak old-growth harvest was back in the 1980s, and the truly fine fiber has been getting scarcer every year since.
Douglas fir does nearly everything: FOHC timbers, posts and beams for timber framing; beaded ceiling and tongue-and-groove paneling; wainscoting and trim; porch and interior flooring. We stock kiln-dried clear vertical-grain flooring in 1x4 and 1x6.

I found Ghent Wood Products to be the only supplier in the Hudson Valley that was able to fill my order of 5/4X4” t&g Doug fir to replace the existing, rotting, original, 100 year old porch floor of my house in Peekskill. The folks in the office are knowledgeable and helpful, and the folks in the yard are the same. I can highly recommend Ghent Wood Products.

I believe that Ghent Wood Products in an example of a great American success story. Moving from humble beginnings, discerning the times, making wise business decisions, while all the time offering excellent product and customer service, they have risen to a place of value in our community. Personally I am grateful that they are here. I always have confidence in their product and their wise council.
I have a custom Cabinetry and Woodworking shop in Clermont NY. I always have a need for both exotic hardwoods and local woods. I have been going to Ghent Wood Products for over 10 years now. They have always been there for me. "I need this and this next week" they have it for me. When I need milling that requires more than my equipment can handle I just call Tom or Marie and they say "sure we can handle that".
I have recommended them to all of the contractors I work with (mostly from Dutchess County) and we all use Ghent Wood Products because they're great. They are all just good people working together with us like a team.

I removed the old teak top and chair arm caps (both made from 1x2" slats) and replaced them with a custom designed & built top and arm caps made from Ayous (from others). As shown in the photos, the ayous "came alive" when I applied your ExoShield product. I followed the great directions and found the work easy. The finish is gorgeous, smooth and durable. I spent a lot of time researching the various wood finish options and am very happy that I settled on yours. My application will be a great test site for the UV protection your finish will provide as I am in South Florida with my patio set getting direct sun every day. I'll keep you posted on the results. Finally, I'd like to acknowledge Zach Wich, your S.E. US sales rep for interest in my project and invaluable assistance in my selection of your product.
