Walnut is the crown jewel of American hardwoods — the dark, warm, chocolate-brown that needs no stain to look expensive. It is the wood people choose when they want a piece to be the centerpiece: heirloom furniture, conference tables, live-edge slabs, and fine cabinetry.
It also happens to be a dream to work — it machines cleanly, carves and turns well, and finishes to a deep, lustrous surface with almost any finish you like. Color runs from pale sap to deep heart, so if consistency matters we can help you select and lay out boards for the look you are after. Appearance
Color. Rich chocolate brown, sometimes with purple, gray, or olive streaks; pale sapwood.
Grain. Usually straight, but can be wavy, curly, or crotch-figured.
Texture. Medium texture with a natural luster.
Working & finishing
Works easily and predictably with hand and machine tools, holds detail, glues well, and finishes to a superb, deep surface. A true pleasure to build with.
Drying. Dries slowly but well, with good dimensional stability once dry.
Durability
Very durable regarding decay resistance — one of the better domestic hardwoods in that respect.
