African Padauk

Few woods make an entrance like Padauk. Fresh off the saw it is an almost unreal red-orange, which is exactly why it shows up in inlay, accent work, turning, and statement furniture. Over time it settles into a deep, warm reddish-brown — still striking, just quieter.
Underneath the color it is a genuinely good structural hardwood: hard, very stable, and highly rot-resistant. It machines and turns cleanly and finishes to a high polish. Appearance
Color. A vivid red-orange when freshly milled, mellowing to a warm reddish- or purplish-brown over time.
Grain. Straight to interlocked.
Texture. Coarse, open texture with a natural luster.
Photosensitive — the color deepens and ambers with UV exposure over time.
Working & finishing
Works well overall despite its density; it turns and finishes superbly. The bright dust can stain and is worth capturing. Glues and finishes without fuss.
Drying. Dries slowly but with very little movement or degrade, and is exceptionally stable once dry.
Durability
Very durable and highly resistant to decay and insects — one of the more rot-resistant African hardwoods.
